The short version
GoToTab's tab management (search, switching, groups, and slash commands) runs entirely in your browser. Searching your browser history also happens on your device — your history is never sent to us. We never read the contents of the pages you visit. We do collect basic product analytics to understand how the extension is used. If you create an account, we store what you save (collections) and, on Pro, a history of the tabs you close so you can reopen them. We don't sell your data and we don't run ads.
What the extension does on your device
Reading and organizing your open tabs, tab groups, and windows happens locally in the browser to render the switcher. The same is true of your browser history, which is read on the device to include matching pages in your search results. None of that data is sent to our servers unless you explicitly save it (see below). We do not access, read, or transmit the contents of the web pages you visit.
Searching your browser history
GoToTab requires the browser's history permission so that your search results can include pages from your own history, not just your open tabs. Your history is read locally, on the device you are using, at the moment you type a search. It is never sent to our servers, never shared with anyone, and we keep no copy of it. You can turn this off at any time with the "Search your browser history" switch in Settings, and search will fall back to your open tabs only. This is separate from the Pro closed-tab history described below, which does store data in your account.
Analytics
We use Amplitude to collect anonymous product-usage analytics: for example, that the popup was opened, that someone signed in, or that an upgrade or “Add to Chrome” button was clicked. This runs for all users, including signed-out ones. If you are signed in, these events are associated with your account (user id, email, and name) so we can understand the sign-in and upgrade experience. Amplitude may process your IP address, from which an approximate region can be derived. We use this only to measure and improve the product; it is never sold or used for advertising.
If you create an account
Sign-in is handled by WorkOS AuthKit. We store your email, name, and avatar to operate your account. Collections you save (page URLs, titles, and favicons) are stored on our servers so they sync across your devices.
Closed-tab history (Pro)
With a Pro account, tabs you close, and tabs automatically closed by the optional Tab Cleanup feature, are saved to your account (their URL, title, and the time they were closed) so you can search them and reopen them from any device. This is on by default for Pro accounts; you can turn it off with the “Save closed tabs” toggle in Settings, and you can clear all stored history at any time from Settings or your account page. This history is used solely to serve your own searches and reopens.
Payments
Payments are processed by Dodo Payments, our merchant of record. We never see or store your card details, only your subscription status.
Third parties we share data with
We only share what each service needs to function: WorkOS (authentication), Dodo Payments (billing), and Amplitude (product analytics). Our application and database are hosted on Railway. We do not sell your data to anyone.
Deleting your data
Deleting your account removes your profile, collections, tokens, and stored closed-tab history from our database. Email us and it's done.
Google API / Chrome Web Store Limited Use
GoToTab's use of information received from Google APIs and from your browser adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. We only use your data to provide and improve the features described above; we do not sell it, use it for advertising, or transfer it to others except as needed to run the service.
